SEMH Teaching Assistant – Primary (Childwall)
Chalk Education is working in partnership with a specialist primary school in Childwall to recruit a SEMH Teaching Assistant to support pupils with attachment and trauma-related needs.
This is a challenging but highly rewarding role, suited to individuals who are resilient, confident, and committed to making a real difference in the lives of vulnerable children.
About the School
The school supports primary-aged children with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs, many of whom have experienced trauma and disrupted attachments. Pupils may present with challenging behaviour, and consistency, structure, and strong relationships are central to the school’s approach.
The Role
As a SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will:
- Support pupils on a 1:1 and small-group basis
- Help manage and de-escalate challenging behaviour using clear, consistent strategies
- Maintain high expectations and firm boundaries that cannot be swayed
- Build positive, trusting relationships while remaining calm and professional
- Work closely with teachers and the wider support team to create a safe learning environment
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for someone who is:
- Resilient, confident, and emotionally robust
- Experienced in working with children (this is essential)
- Comfortable managing challenging behaviour and maintaining clear boundaries
- Calm under pressure and consistent in their approach
- Passionate about supporting children with SEMH, attachment, and trauma needs
Experience working with children who display challenging behaviour (e.g. SEMH, PRU, alternative provision, care, or youth work settings) would be highly advantageous.
